USB2 via dual/triple interface external drive?

I going to add yet another drive to my Nieces' G4 iMac (flat screen with FW400 and USB1)... iTunes and iPhoto have outgrown their internal drive, but I'd like to see if I can get USB2 as a bonus.
If you use a dual (or triple) interface external drive (FW400 with USB2) and connect it to the computer via FireWire, can you get USB2 speeds from the external drive's USB2 jack?
Sort of a "free" FireWire to USB2 adapter for the new USB only iPods.

Anyone ever try this?
