I've done speed tests on internet connections, but I was wondering, is there a way to do them to test a USB adaptor?

I bought a an adaptor that was sold as USB3, but it has a little white inner prong (sorry, I know that's not a technical term) where every USB3 plug that I have seen up to now has a little blue inner prong thing.

I checked the order info and it is indeed advertised as USB3, but I was just wondering if there's any way to test, or to find out for sure.

thanks, as always, for any and all feedback!

If you connect a USB 3.0 device to your computer through the adapter, you can check the System Report application to see if it's connected as USB 2.0 or 3.0.

If the only thing you wanted to know is whether it was USB3 or not, the System Report that @chrfr mentioned should be sufficient.

If you wanted to test the read/write on a drive connect to the adapter, then Blackmagic Disk Speed Test is on the Mac App store and is a pretty popular tool to use.

The Blackmagic test will certainly be illuminating with an external disk. My inexpensive USB hard drives show ~170MB/sec on USB3 but drop to about 30MB/sec on USB2.
