use 3G iPhone sim with first gen iPhone?

I was wondering if it would be possible to buy a 3g iPhone and use the sim/service plan with a first gen iPhone?

I want to buy a 3G iPhone for my brother who is in a country that has yet to be blessed with the iPhone. any suggestions on how to do this cheaply?
