Use AirPod charging unit as sound amplifier for Live Listen

I read that on must place one's iPhone near a sound source in order for a wireless AirPod to pick up the sound from a distance when using the new "Live Listen" option in iOS12.

I read that it was possible to also just use the charger (dental floss like box) as a speaker, rather than the iDevice?
