Is this possible?

If I got connection cables, could I use the iPad as an apple tv? Would I be able to AirPlay from my Mac to the iPad connected to the tv? Could I control the iPad with a remote (either apple remote or an app with iPhone?)

If so, is there a good app for navigation purposes?

Yes and err no

You can connect your iPad to a TV with the HDMI cable and play content that is on the device or open up iTunes and add content to the iPad.

If the new feature in ML lets you mirror anything on your mac to another device like an iPad then you could do away with the appletv altogether.

If you already have an iPad and cable then I would use this over the appletv as it is a cheap way of getting many of the features. I would say just add your films or tv shows to the iPad and play on the tv, then you don't need to have your computer on.
