I want to set up my Gmail IMAP account in Mail.app so that when I hit the delete key in Mail.app, the message gets archived permanently (in the All Mail folder).

What's the best way to do this? Should I select the "All Mail" folder and then choose "Use this Mailbox for Trash"?

You can, but make sure to first set "Permanently erase deleted messages" to "Never". Otherwise Mail can try to empty the "All Mail" folder. Not a good thing.

Thanks for the tip.

I just read on Google's help section that this isn't a good idea. Maybe someone can help me figure this out.

I want to be able to hit "delete" in Mail.app and have the message archived in Gmail. I'd like to be able to access/search all of my "All Mail" messages from Mail.app. I'd like all sent messages from Mail.app (regardless of which account they are sent from - I have several) to be stored in Sent Mail in Gmail.

How would I set it up this way?
