I have a video camera with a small screen. The camera has an HDMI out port.

I'd like to use my ipad as bigger screen.

I've bought a HDMI to 30 pin cable. Once I connect the cable to the camera, and the other end to the ipad, how do I get the live video up on the ipad?

You can't, iPad does not provide any means of hdmi input.
The adapter you bought is only for hdmi output.

However there are adapters in the market that would allow you to connect hdmi ONLY to ipad's display, but you would have to disassembly your ipad and remove the screen ( it is cheaper to jut buy the screen and the adapter as a kit, and it is nice for having an external retina display)

That's interesting. Can you please provide a link? Thanks!

Pity you can't use most mobile devices as a display device.
