Use iPad Garageband instruments as input for garageband '11?

How can you use an iPad as an input or MIDI device for Garageband '11 on a Mac? I currently have the iPad's audio output plugged into the audio input a Mac Mini using a double-ended audio cable, but GarageBand (on my Mac) does not detect the iPad as an input source.

Any help would be appreciated!
