I was thinking of replacing my iPhone6+ with the latest iPad mini. Why - I do much more reading and photo processing than talking on the phone. I also suspect there will be good deals on iPad Minis after the Tues Apple event at the new HQg. If I get the iPad mini with cellular to use Verizon what do I gain, what do I loose and what are the issues. Is this a stupid idea. Don't worry about the mini being too big. I am 6'6"+ with big hands. I also tend to hold my iPhone and not stuff it into my pocket. I would probably use a wireless head phone of some kind and not hold the mini to my head for calls

So I could not call my parents on their landline or call my doctor, correct. If that's the case then it's a pretty big issue
You'll have to use a third party app like Talkatone or Google Voice.

Apple's idea behind the iPad (as with the iPod) was for it being a device that mainly uses data. Hence, no phone app and no ability to make native phone calls (other than Facetime calls).

Carriers also limit what you can do with iPads. For instance, my iPad Air 2 is on a data only line on T-Mobile. They restrict phone calls from that line.

If Apple allowed this people would be less inclined to buy the more expensive iPhone and that would hurt Apple's profit margin.
