Use Iphone 3g as MP3 Player?

I was wondering if it is possible to go and buy a new iPhone 3g and bring it home but not actually use it as a phone just yet but instead as a MP3 player for a month. I have about a month left on my verizon contract but really want to get the iPhone 3g and play around with it and then I will activate it with a contract and it will be my new phone. Is this possible? or is the phone a brick til you get it activated with a contract?
