Use iPhone 3G wtihout a data plan on Verizon?

Hubby and I upgraded to iPhone 4 and switched to Verizon. We gave one of the old iPhones 3G to one of the kids to use as an iPod Touch, which works fine. He also has a separate cell phone on our family plan with just calls/text.

If we add a phone line to our plan for them is it possible for the kids to use the the old iPhones for calls and text plus wifi when available, but not data? Basically an iPod touch with calls and text? They don't need a data plan - well, they think they do, but we don't!


If we are able to do this, is it possible to transfer his contacts from his current phone (some slider type) to the reconfigured iPhone?

Unfortunately this is impossible for a couple reasons. First off, the iPhone 3G will not work on Verizon's network (calls, text, or data), only the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 is capable of this. Second, even if you wanted to add service to the 3G on AT&T, you cannot add service without adding a data plan as well.

There are various ways to transfer contacts from a phone to an iPhone.
