my x will be here this week. Or suppose to be anyway. Can I use it without Face ID? Just slide to unlock? I had the s8 and didn’t use the finger print reader cause of how they placed it. Wondering if I can do the same on this phone.

Yeah I just wanted to be sure cause I seen online where it said if you don’t use any security it will keep asking you to set it up. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t gonna be a pain in the a$$.

Using nothing or using Face ID, in terms of ease of use, is pretty much the same.
You look at your phone, you swipe, and done. You're on the homescreen. Who can tell you have Face ID ?

It will continue to prompt you but you can circumvent this by setting it up during the initial setup of the phone and then disabling it.

I suggest you to try Face ID before dismissing it. Samsungs fingerprint sensor placement is one thing. Don't let that experience affect how you use the x. Entirely different devices and user experiences.

Note that you often don't need to swipe. With lift to wake you will usually see hidden messages or other notifications on the lock screen, and tapping them takes you straight to the app you want. The FaceID identification takes place in the background while you're doing this.

Seriously, don't whatever you do dismiss FaceID without having tried it. As usual with Apple changes that get caned on here by people who've never used it, it actually works well. Much better than Touch ID in my experience.

I agree. I don’t even notice it’s there. Just pick it up and swipe up. No waiting or anything.

I’m down under at the moment so constantly changing my sunnies and hats in very bright sunlight and early dark evenings. Heck even when in an airframe in the car or at the beach. It hasn’t missed me a single time. It’s awesome. Touch ID wouldn’t have worked until I dried my salty hands from the sea.

But you couldn't use it with wet hands. Or with gloves. Or even dirty hands. So, no, Touch ID was not better. It was different, at least.
Better for me. Maybe not everyone. But for me it was better. I use my bed every night, and I lay my phone down more then once a day... Gloves not even once a week. But I bought the phone. I will either live with the stupid feature or ill turn off all security. Second choice is most likely gonna be the one I pick.

I have the X and don't use FaceID to unlock the phone, I do use it for app/ website passwords. It's pretty simple to swipe up and enter a pin, I don't even think about it. To me it's the best of both worlds. YMMV.

I have it right now lol. I’m just not a fan of it. Touch ID was a lot better. You could use it while it was sitting down on the table.
Fair enough it doesn’t work at all when laying flat on a table and you sitting at it. If that is a common use case then I can fully appreciate you want it switched off.

Why? It's only scanning your face when the screen awakens via raise to wake, tap to wake, or a press of the side button.

There must be some reason the X has worse battery life than the 8 plus although it has a bigger battery, same size screen and an oled display and rest or components are the same

My old 6 plus that I don't use anymore has a constant notification on the settings icon, telling me to set up Face ID and or my iCloud. Not sure if the X will have the same constantly telling you to set up Face ID. I doubt it but who knows.

I think you should at least try it, and if it is not for you then just deactivate it.

I believe it scans more often than that. It lowers the volume of the ringer and notifications when unlocked and looking at the screen. But at the same time, that face check might also get triggered by the upcoming notification so it's not as if its checking all the time.

I will often lay mine on my desk at work, and yes you have to lean over it to unlock with FaceID. A simple solution for my work desk is to put my iPhone on a stand (I use an old business card holder) so it is at an angle. When the iPhone is propped up a little, not only does FaceID work without me having to lean, but the iPhone is also easier to see/use at my desk. It's enough to make me reconsider one of the cases with the built-in kickstand. (forgot to mention it only works in portrait orientation, so I'm trying out something that is better than my business card holder since that works only for landscape orientation).

Like the OP I also grab my iPhone off the nightstand, and so far FaceID has been fine for that... but only after I trained it to recognize me without my glasses on. At first I had to put my passcode in, but now it recognizes me with or without glasses. I have to pick up my iPhone, but I'm going to do that anyway. I also need to lift my head a little if half my face is smushed into the pillow.

Overall I think FaceID is more convenient than TouchID, especially when it comes to unlocking other apps, but I had unusual problems with TouchID because it refused to work with my let thumb no matter how often I re-scanned it. Most of the time it worked fine with my right thumb. So whether I used TouchID or FaceID, there are times when I know I will need to enter my passcode. It's no big deal, but overall FaceID works better for me.
