How can I use my own ringtones for sms, and anything other then phone calls?

No, iOS does not all you to use custom ringtones for messages and alerts. If you jailbreak it, I believe you can but without JBing you cannot

You can use iphone explorer to change SMS tones; it gives you root access.
I suggest you back up your original tones.

FYI: SMS tones are aiff files with the .caf extension. You'll have to convert them if they're in mp3 format.

Are we talking JB or non-JB? Do you have a resource link? Thanks!

Yes, it requires jailbreaking your device. I really don't see Apple changing its stance on custom SMS tones until such a time as they overhaul the entire notification system on the phone. Until that time you'll either have to use Tri-Tone (the new sounds are totally unusable) or jailbreak your device.

Wow I didn't know that.. Apple is really restrictive on what we are allowed to do as far as customizing out phone.

Tri-tone isn't the only sound. I use Bell and my wife uses Glass on her iPhone. Agree that the new ones totally stink.

Agreed, Apple is a little over the top in that regard.
