Is there a way to use an old iTunes ITL file to replace metadata in my current library?

I tried File->Library->Import Playlist, but since it's not an XML file it won't work. I don't have an old iTunes XML file.

If I replace my current .ITL file with the old one, my metadata is restored until I play a track and then it updates with the incorrect metadata that's embedded in the song file (that's stored in iTunes Media).

How do I prevent that from happening?

My problem is not the library file, it's the actual stored metadata in each song file.
