I use Carbon Copy Cloner for my backups. They're on external drives at different physical locations and make them twice a week.

Like the idea of having local recent snapshots on my Mac in case inadvertently delete something whilst working. It seems Time Machine will do this but I don't want to use Time Machine for full backups as well as CCC. Is there a way to take advantage of the local recent backups feature of Time Machine without activating it fully to backup to external drives?

Since you already use CCC, why not turn on its Snapshots? And since CCC will also keep versions of files if you turn on its SafetyNet, you may not need Time Machine. You could use both CCC and TM. Always good to have more than one backup strategy.

If I understand correctly CCC snapshots are made only at the moment the backup tasks run. Mine are on external drives and snapshots thus made twice a week.

The time machine "local snapshots" - I think - occur several times during the day, which would provide some protection against inadvertent deletions (at least for that day) between proper CCC backups.

oh, I see, in CCC one can enable snapshots on the SOURCE volume as well as the DESTINATION.

Cool. Haven't quite figured out how in CCC one would locate which snapshot contains the most recent version of a deleted file. That's easy in Time Machine.
