I don't think this is an option. It's the same with iPhone and iPad.

Click to expand... It's the same as the phone I'm afraid - on a clean boot you'll need to enter the password. Honestly the sleep mode is fine on the MBAs by closing the lid and you shouldn't be losing any battery life if that's what you're concerned about.
