I want to use a TV monitor with this MacBook Air. However, I cannot find the settings in the MacBook to enable me to do this. Any advice gratefully received.

It’s not clear exactly what settings you’re looking for… possibly overscan?

If that’s not it please provide more detail. What exactly is the TV doing (or not doing) that you want to change?

I want to use a TV monitor to provide a display that is larger than is available on my MacBook. I have connected the monitor to the MacBook , using a cable HDM-MiniDisplay. On the monitor, I have selected input via HDM. Now I need to tell the MacBook to send the display to the monitor. I choose System Preferences, Didplay, but there is nothing there to enable me to achieve the desired result.

I hope that this makes matters clearer.

Suggest you get a mDP > HDMI adapter + actual HDMI cable. Those single cable solutions are a train wreck.

It will recognize and enable the TV automatically if the cabling is correct. Test the cable on a different display if possible - if still not working as @Bigwaff says replace your cabling.

If it works OK on a different display, it's likely the HDMI port on the TV.
