Use upgrade with Verizon--required to activate on Verizon first?

I have an upgrade on a Verizon line that I may use for the iPhone 6. I would go through Apple.com rather than Verizonwireless.com.

If I do this, am I required to activate the phone with a Verizon SIM? Or could I immediately stick my AT&T SIM into the phone and start using it?

I do plan to use it on AT&T, but I I just want to make sure I don't do anything to get the ESN blacklisted on Verizon, because I may use it on Verizon at some point in the future.
