Hi,

I am in need of purchasing a Mac Pro work station, more or less ASAP. I am looking at buying a used model, and have found two options: the 2008 eight core 2.8 GHZ model or the 2009 2.93 GHZ Quad Core model. both have 3GB of RAM which i would upgrade to at least 12GB. I can get either of these for about the same price (around $1500). My use for the machine would be primarily for encoding video files in Compressor and Final Cut 7. Wouldn't be used for much in the way of editing or rendering, just taking files and encoding them for different playback uses.

Any thoughts on if the advantages of the newer processor on the 2009 machine would outweigh the eight cores of the older machine? I know there are rumors floating about of new mac pros imminently, but, I'm not holding my breath, and honestly, I need to get something in the next week.

I had also considered buying the new iMac quad i7 model, but I would like the ease of adding more HDs internally, and I may need to install a video i/o card in the future, so having the PCI expansions is a bonus.
