Used Macbook or Used Macbook Pro $600

I have $600 to spend and I also have a brand new 500GB Laptop hard drive. Question is do I but an older Macbook Pro for $600 and upgrade the hard drive and memory or a newer used Macbook?

I used to have a MBA but sold it due to it being too slow and lots of beachball action.

macbook is not going to be any good for longterm, cracking issue is enough to buy a pro.
