We are trying to do a little research for our daughter who is in her sophomore year in college and her older Macbook has died.

She is considering buying a used Macbook Pro 1.83Ghz with 512ram for around $650. Or buying a new 13inch black MacBook with 2.2ghz and 1gig of ram for about $450 more.

We lean towards the new machine but are open to some good advice.

Thanks

money is clearly a concern but I say go with the MacBook. You will get a considerably faster machine with far fewer problems (no whine or random shut downs), a warranty, better wifi signal (which is important for college) and more reliable machine (because it is newer) which is especially important because the 1.83, again doesn't have a warranty. Ram is cheap so that isn't a major factor but the greater HD of the MB is also a plus. HD are cheap too, but not cheap to upgrade on a Pro - you can do it yourself on MB.

The differences between the two are way more than $400, so if you can swing it get it. You cam get 2 gb of Ram and Time Capsule for future gifts and not worry about her losing that term paper if anything should go wrong.

And don't forget you can get an excellent return MacBook which meets all my above points for $1049 and less.

Thanks for your thoughts.....and this is pretty much the direction that we were headed.
