Transferred data from old mac to my new imac. I have a new time machine icon on my desktop which i assume is the transferred data. What do I do with it? replace folders with transferred folders or their contents?

If you used MA to transfer everything from your old system, your data files should be on your new iMac in the same folder they were on the old system...no need to mess with grabbing Time Machine backups.
The time machine dialog came up while setting the migration assistant, something about choosing a back-up disk location and listed only the older macs HD.
