I just got my 40mm Apple Watch SE today and in Canada after tax it is $416. I've been thinking about my decision since its my first apple watch and all I need it for is really just some workout tracking and notifications. I have other watches for occasions.

I found a seller willing to let his Apple Watch series 4 go for about $240, a 40mm as well. I'm thinking of asking for about $220 and I think it'll be okay.

I know the Series 4 technically use the same processor as the SE, wondering if its worth it? I don't care much for the ECG feature nor the always on altimeter found on the SE.

I've been stuck on deciding this lol.

So, that's about 50% savings? Two questions to consider:

Are you concerned about the physical shape of watch?

Are you prepared to get a new battery? (since a two year old watch might have degradation)

Does buying used frighten you?(concerned with possible water damage, internal damage, any other things you can't see that might not be serviceable by Apple?)

there are many that are just fine buying used to save money, and you getting a watch half off is a pretty good deal. Then again, getting a brand new watch with new battery and (maybe) newer Ion-X Glass technology is pretty swell.

But if you want my opinion (which I am very price conscientious) if the watch is in good shape and I didn't want to spend $416, then the S4 would be great for health tracking and notifications. I had a Series 0 until getting the SE yesterday, and the Series 0 still did notifications and workouts just fine.

hope that helps!

** further thought on the battery: I NEVER got my series 0 battery replaced and it would still get through the day (with all the battery saving tips in full force, of course), so you might not have to worry about battery.

Thank you so much for the reply, you brought up so many good points.

I did think about battery and am willing to replace it down the line if I can get a good deal on the watch. But I forgot about the possibility of water damage. I'm assuming if its water damaged and I do a battery replacement, it'll be a full out of service cost rather than a $99 CAD replacement eh?

Ill definitely be looking at the physical condition of the watch before I buy it and hopefully internals will be okay.

Let's say all of those points are covered, at the end of it all I'm assuming the Series 4 and 5/ SE will have similar software support?

You're welcome! Nothing like late night typing on the ol' Forum! Haha

I'm not sure about water damage costs , and battery replacement... sorry about that.

and yeah the series 4 had the S4 chip which was the same performance as S5 in the SE, but there surely was other improvements made to the S5 (really not sure though). So performance wise, yeah all evidence points to the Series 4 having the same update life as the SE.
