Good afternoon,

I recently messed up.

My MacBook failed to load the OS, it would simply crash upon loading a user profile.
I loaded up the recovery partition and plugged in an external hard drive which I have been using for Time Machine backups.

Only issue is I used my partners Time Machine backup rather than my own.
On further investigation I discovered that my Time Machine has not been running correctly for several months.

Is there a way to recover the data which has been written over by the Time Machine restore.
Or is my current data gone for good?

Thanks,
Jack.

If you have "over-written" the old data with the wrong TM backup, my guess is that "what you had" is now "gone for good".

I know this doesn't help rescue you from your current predicament, but I would like to offer some advice for the future:

STOP USING TIME MACHINE -- don't use it any more!
You've just seen how flaky it can be when the chips are down (by your own admission, your TM backup was "not running correctly for several months").

Instead, use a "cloning app" to create and maintain a BOOTABLE cloned backup of your internal drive.
You can use either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to do this.
Both are FREE to download and use for the first 30 days.

Both will create BOOTABLE copies of your internal drive that are finder-mountable.
They'll look EXACTLY like your internal drive does -- you won't be able to tell them apart unless you go to "about this Mac" (apple menu) and check to see which drive you're booted from.

Go forth from this day and learn -- a sadder, but wiser man.
