Users Directory on Snow Leopard.

I have a Users directory that I would like to tar up then transfer it to an external drive, all 44gigs of it. If I were to do that and transfer it to another system with SL/Lion installed, could I successfully untar it to the proper directory and it not mess anything up?

I'm aware I'l need to change/add permissions and the account will be named the same.

Any ideas? Tips? Suggestions? Comments?
