When I want to call using the 'secondary' number I just select 'secondary', but where do I select 'secondary' when I want to sent a text using the 'secondary' number? I don't see where to select that in the Messages app. Do I have to go into Contacts, set a particular contact to 'secondary' then select the Message icon in Contacts? What if I want to send a text to a number that's not in my Contacts?

I am also not getting texts sent to the 'secondary' number. And with iOS 13, iMessages is supposed to be functional with the 'secondary' number.

To receive simply make sure the person has your secondary number. Your answer to your own question is correct. I think the logic, is anyone you'll be texting has either initiated contact with you, or you'll want to text them at least once.

So yes to send from Secondary you'll need to set a contact and set the secondary number for that contact.

A little clunky... Yes, but it is what it is for now.
