Using 2g sim in 3g phone?

If I remove the sim from the first gen and put it in a iphone 3g, I'll get 3g internet, yes? Internet speed is limited on hardware only or is At&t limiting it to edge service on their end?

In case your curious, I'm tethering my laptop but have a first gen(hardware limited to edge service). Remove sim, put in 3g capable phone and tether faster...extra speed no extra $. =)

now to find a cheap phone that is unlocked(or att bound) and can tether...might be harder than it sounds x_X
