Using a Cinema Display with a MacBook running off battery

Hello all.

First post! :cool:

I have a MacBook and an ACD, however, the screen switches off whenever I disconnect the Macbook's magsafe. Why is that?
It's not a huge inconvenience but as I tend to only use the Macbook in this way, I'm worried about the long term effects on the battery if it's never allowed to run down.
