I read this bookmarked article every few months, usually when I accidentally come across it... now that the 15" MBPro's are out, around, and there are plenty of used, broken, and damaged ones available on Ebay and so on.... what exactly is it that prevents someone from taking the internals of a donor 15MBPro and putting them into a 17" MBPro and sourcing a Retina-similar screen to fit in there?
I'm fully aware that there is a part or two of that suggestion that's infinitely more complicated than I realize, but what is it? Aren't the Retina screens made by Samsung or LG? Isn't there someone who could put together and sell an upgrade kit, or an adapter for the screen or internals? Even if there were a $1,000 kit that was just a screen, some cables, a board or two, that you could have a 17" MBPro with a high resolution screen, there's be a decent number of hard core users who'd be interested in it.
Things change so fast every year, so at this point, what would be the greatest obsticals for having a 17"MBP with a high resolution screen (high-end performance isn't so much the focus, just a nice large screen for browsing and iTunes).
Sorry for the parts of this that sound naive and over simplify, but I'm wondering this stuff all the time...
