Using a Mac-encrypted USB drive with a Chromebook

I finally figured out how to encrypt a flash drive on my Mac, after formatting it with GUID partition in Mac extended (journaled) format. It mounts and asks for a password just like I'd hoped when I plug it into my Mac. But when I try to access it through Files on my Chromebook, I see nothing there but a drive icon for "Boot OS X" or some such thing. Selecting gives me just a "nothing to see here" panel. (There are several files on it, which I verified when I opened it in my Mac.)

Is this just an incompatibility brick wall, or am I neglecting some step?

I doubt that Chromebooks can mount encrypted Mac drives.
