I currently have a MacBook Air 13.3 (2013), which is just great for working on your lap. It's not heavy, it does not get hot, and it's silent when using Visual Studio Code.

What is the MacBook Pro 16 i9 like to use on your lap? Is it too heavy? Does it get hot? What is the fan noise like compared to a MacBook Air?

I went from a 13" MBP (last version) to the 16" and though it's well balanced on your lap, it does weight quite a bit more. Next to my 13, it seems huge and heavy. If I’m not comparing, it seems fine.

It only seems to get hot and loud (but not super loud) when working on CPU/GPU intensive tasks (image/video apps). Same as with the 13, but might be different to the MBA.

Works great. Xcode is a joy on 16. unity of course triggers dgpu so it gets warm. If you’re just using vs code the mbair would be fine. ides usually benefit from more screen.

I occassionaly program (VSCode, angular, python, ML) on a 16 MBP in my lap. I find it relatively uncomfortable because it is ungainly because of size. I much prefer to use it on a table. But in a pinch it will do.

Use mine on my lap all the time. I was a longtime 13" user and switched over to a 15" in 2015. I absolutely love the 16".
