Using a MIDI Guitar in Garageband Tutorials

I've got a YouRock Guitar which connects to GarageBand without any issues. BUT, it refuses to work (i.e. no sound) within the tutorials, i.e. you can't play along or record within the guitar tutorials.

It seems as though GB is using the internal microphone to pick up sounds and not the MIDI/USB port within the tutorial section. Upon checking the input settings it says 'Internal Mic' and there's no other options to choose.

Does anybody else have this issue?

I've got a MBP13", OSX 10.6.6.
