This might seem like a strange post, but I decided I wanted to share a peculiar experience.
I have been using my iPhone 3g for the last two years. It's a good phone, it really is, and I have no complaints about it.
A few days ago I checked my phone bills and found out I pay much more than I thought I did. As such, I started messing around with my Vodafone contract and got rid of my internet. In addition I decided to try out my old Nokia 6700 classic that had been in my desk drawer for two years.
Surprisingly, it's a really good phone. It's so incredible simple and it's so compact and has a nice feel to it. It's much less bulky than the iPhone and looks really good. After lurking on these forums for a while one may start to think that nothing is good except Apple products. I was very surprised that it is actually a very decent phone with a solid operating system.
And I notice that I don't miss any of the apps. I check my e-mail less often (only on my macbook), but my life is not that hectic that I have to check my e-mail every 2-3 minutes. I don't really miss the browser and the games. I can't check my bank account anymore - but do I really need to know every hour what my balance is?
I notice that I spend a lot less absolutely useless time by doing all sorts of things on the iPhone. I feel less neurotic now - I only look at my phone when I have to send a message make a call, rather than constantly wasting time doing all sorts of rubbish with it.
It's very strange that in the end I found out that all the features available on the iPhone don't really make life as easy as everyone seems to believe. It kind of feels strange not constantly fiddling with the iPhone and browsing the internet, and now that I have this simple phone for calling/texting, I really don't feel the need to use a smartphone anymore.
