Hello eveyone,

I currently have a 5,1 Mac Pro with a Sonnet USB 3.0 card. I want to get Sonnet's USB-C card or Caldigits card and use an USB-C dock.

Would I only lose the display functionality? I don't need it as I have a GTX 1080 and a GT120 for displays.

Would this even work?

I'm interested in trying to keep this setup releveant and be able to hot swap some accessories between this and my Thunderbolt 3 MacBook Pro (like drives and what not)

I know I can't get Thunderbolt 3 on the 5,1 but using usb c drives and docks would be very helpful as I do some recording and video editing and I'm trying to simplify the setup.

I'm really hoping the new Mac Pro rumored to be unvieled this year is as modular as Apple says it willl be haha.

But I feel this would be something to hold me over until I could even afford to buy the new tower.
