As I already have a very nice router between my home network and my ISP (for the record a Cisco 871) I definitely don't need the Airport Extreme to do any routing for me, but what I really like about that device is its wireless-n capability and the ability to stick a usb hub into that usb port, connect heaps of devices to it, and have it share.

Do you think the AE will advertise its shares to the rest of the network? Does it need to be the main gateway device to be able to do it?

If it's anything like the Airport Express, the answer is yes. The configuration for the Express can put the device in one of a variety of modes.
