Using Aliases in Mail with Pop

I was looking forward to using my .mac aliases right in Mail when I upgraded to Tiger, but unless I'm doing something wrong, it looks like that feature is limited to an IMAP setup only. I can't find anything on Apple's support site confirming this, but is this true?
