Hi,

I am from the US and am going to Greece next month. How can I check if my unlocked Verizon iPhone X will work with a locally purchased SIM card in Greece?

Any suggestions on where to buy the SIM cards?

thanks!

Verizon unlocks their iPhones after they are purchased and then activated on their network. They used to sell them unlocked but changed not long ago to act as a deterrent to theft. That said, you should be fine as far as picking up a SIM card.

According to https://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/ it looks like the iPhone X should work on Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind in Greece. Both the Verizon version and AT&T / T-Mobile version would work as they support the same bands.

As far as picking up a local SIM you could try contacting those carriers directly to see what the best way is to get a SIM card before you travel there.

A few years ago my daughter went to school in Europe, and took some time to travel. Greece was part of that. She swapped out her VZ SIM card when she got to the UK, and swapped in a local prepaid card. I think it was Orange...

Other than iMessages getting a little confused from time to time, this worked for her - data, and to a much smaller extent, voice.

My wife and I are going to France and Italy next month. I just ordered a SIM card from https://www.simoptions.com/.

While my X isn't unlocked by T-Mobile, my SE is, so once we get to Paris, I'll pop in the EUR SIM in my SE and I should be set. I know I won't get super fast speeds with T-Mobile overseas, hence why I went the route of buying a local SIM card for the trip.

Thanks for the replies. Another question...if I already have Wi-Fi calling enabled with my carrier in the US, will I be able to make phone calls while on a wifi network overseas, assuming I keep my US-based simcard in the phone?

I believe the answer is yes since the WiFi call is over data/internet.
