A family member has asked me to buy an iPhone5 for them and send it to them overseas to italy;

My (ignorant) question, would it work with an italian Sim card (or whatever the iphone sims are called?)

Or would it have to be jailbroken? I seem to recall that the AT&T iphones were blocked somehow so they couldnt accept an italian card, at least a few generations ago... is that the same with verizon and sprint?

I have 24 hours to figure this out, thanks for the help!

No.The phone will have to be unlocked to work off of the AT&T network.

So the answer is YES, the phone can be unlocked?! What if i have a contract with AT&T but buy an AT&T iPhone 5 without a AT&T contract, will they still unlock it?
