Using an External Hard drive in Parallels

I recently installed winxp in parallels. I need to use an external drive with it. Every time i try to mount it though, it says that it is in use by something else. I have tried leaving it on and ejecting it from osx but that didnt help. Am i doing something wrong or can you just not use externals with parallels?
