With firmware 2.0 my 3G iPhone had no problem with the GPS. But with update 2.0.1 and 2.0.2, I noticed that my location would not show up via GPS when running Maps. It would simply narrow my position down to a useless 4 square mile big blue circle (whereas with the 2G iPhone it would at least locate the block I was at) and not give me the pinging blue dot. Leaving Maps running without the screen shutting off still wouldn't show my location after 5-10 minutes.

Then I tried running Breadcrumbs, a free app that shows you your coordinates. When starting the program, it showed my my coordinates based on cell towers (triangle icon on the top of the program), and within 1-2 mins of running the program, the icon switched to a satellite as the iPhone was finally able to get satellite position. Then running Maps, my location appears instantly with the pinging blue dot. Finally!

This so far for me has "fixed" the GPS when using Maps twice now. Previously, I had tried force-quitting Maps, turning off location service, and rebooting but none worked.

So see if using Breadcrumbs works for you!
