Might be a stupid question, but I want to use my 2011 imac as display for a 2011 mini. I know it will work with Thunderbolt cable, but this is a temporary measure until the new monitor for the mini arrives, so I don't want to buy a TB cable just to use for few days.

Can I connect a mini display to dvi converter to each machine and use a dvi cable between them?

Too bad, it was a long short.

I think I'll try to find some kind of free or trial VNC software to remotely connect the imac to the mini over wired network.

Does anybody know some good free or trial VNC software?

ScreenRecycler or AirDisplay, but you have to configure this on the Mac mini too, thus you need some kind of display first.
