I’m getting my 2017 MBP replaced with an M1 MBA (didn’t feel I needed the MBP so figured I’d spend the money on 16GB ram and the air rather than an 8GB MBP)

my current MBP keyboard is falling apart - two keys literally disconnected and I have to type carefully or they’ll come out. Others have had the surface work off.

I’m wondering about asking if I can keep it as it’s probably written off. If they say yes and I can buy it cheap enough, would I have any issues with getting the keyboard addressed by Apple as it was bought originally by a business?

You'd better be careful.

The extended keyboard replacement warranty runs for 4 years from the initial date of purchase.
It's possible that a "2017" MBP could have "passed beyond" that 4 year period by now.

You should ask your employer about getting it repaired NOW while still under their (your employer's) ownership. Mention the free extended warranty.
BE SURE to advise them to have it done either by a brick-n-mortar Apple Store, or by sending it directly to Apple (Apple will even provide a prepaid shipping box).

If it gets fixed that way, and they're willing to give it to you, might be worth consideration.

If it was me, I'd buy my own NEW MacBook Pro, either Intel-based or m1 ...

Two quick thoughts:
  1. Apple's warranty may not be transferrable. If the MBP was purchased at retail, you should be able to look up the warranty terms on Apple's website. But if the MBP was purchased under a program for businesses or large institutions, the warranty could be very different from a retail warranty.
  2. Just buy an external keyboard if you end up getting the MBP for free. Then no worries for a minimal outlay of cash!

Thanks. It runs pretty hot and the fans ramp up all the time and the keyboard is falling to pieces but if it’s cheap it’s cheap :) it would probably go to my wife and I don’t think I can get my company to repair it or they might try and make me use it and I want my new M1 MBA
