Have read on another thread and also online about using programs to ramp up the fans to blow out the dust.

Is this safe? Is there a risk of the dust entering other parts of the computer rather than exiting out of the back?

I occasionally use SMC Fan Control to whack up my fans to maximum now and again just to give them a "clean" however I feel comfortable doing this as I open my iMac every 6 months or so and manually clean it so I'd imagine I'm only blowing through surface dust.

Wether it works or not I don't know, I may be making it worse or doing nothing at all.

As for damaging your Mac by running the fans at full speed, it's unlikely it'll do any harm, they're likely tested by Apple running at full speed so they're designed to take it.

I'd recommend opening the machine and cleaning it manually if you can.
