I just put together a firewire hard drive which does a fine job of booting an iBook. It consists of a Travelstar 10 gb 2.5" drive in a Macally FW/USB 2.0 enclosure. The internal hard drive of the iBook is caput.

Is there anything wrong with using the hard drive as the primary boot drive in the long term?

I don't see any reason why there would be. Only downside is if you accidentally unplugged the drive while working :p
