I’ve been a Google Photos user on iOS since I can remember. I use both iCloud backup and Google Photos. I don’t have optimized storage on, so it’s fairly simple, I take a photo, it gets backed up on iCloud and Google Photos.
But, the sheer size of my library has started to weigh in on me. I plan to turn on the optimized storage feature when I get a new iPhone. I still want to use Google Photos. I have a few questions.
- turning on optimized photos mean the photos in my photos app are basically just thumbnails until I open them. Will Google Photos see these as ‘different’ pictures because of their size and resolution? I don’t want it to start replicating all 5,000 photos and videos. Right now, whenever I change phones, I do a Finder backup and restore and Google Photos doesn’t replicate anything.
- Google Photos doesn’t do a ‘real time’ backup because of iOS. It periodically does it in the background. So what happens if I take a photo, it gets backed up to iCloud and removed from my phone before Google Photos had a chance to run in the background?
