I use the Magellan Roadmate App and the Magellan Car Kit. I notice when I go on a long trip my iPhone gets really warm. I believe that it's because the screen is on so long. I'm worried that this can be doing some damage either to the components or reducing the battery life due to heat. Any thoughts on this?

Yeah, I wonder about this too.
Unfortunately, I don't know how much more we can do than speculate.
We all know "heat is bad." But how bad? How much heat? Is the heat really going to significantly affect the lifetime of the phone?

Maybe a bonafide computer thermal engineer could make educated guesses...

any out there that have done an analysis of the iPhone using GPS?

p.s. I think the heat is due to the GPS chip being active, not the screen, because my phone doesn't heat up like that when I read a book or browse the web for a while.

That is why navigation in iPhone is not good due to heat up especially for a long ride. If I where you, just buy a separate GPS like garmin or alike.

The Car Kit may help the internal GPS but without the car kit the build in GPS of the iPhone is not good for a long run.
