I have found that using HFS+ for NAS HDD sparsebundles results in faster backup speeds, probably because of this.
Also, if I mount an APFS backup from a NAS manually, it doesn't always want to unmount without force. I've checked that nothing (that I've launched) is consuming it, there are no rogue processes accessing it, checked with lsof. Hdiutil detach says the resource is busy.
To be clear, the backup volume itself is unmounted, but I can't make the Mac detach from the sparsebundle, in order to detach from the host server, a Raspberry Pi. It sticks around in diskutility list and in Disk Utility.app. Which prevents me from disconnecting the MacBook Pro and take it on the road. This issue doesn't happen on the other NAS, which hosts an HFS+ sparsebundle.
For these reasons, I'd like to stick to HSF+ backups for spinning disks for now. But if I ask Big Sur to start a new NAS backup, it will create APFS backups. Do we have any way around that?
A workaround I've been using is to take an older Catalina HFS+ sparsebundle and keep adding to that. But I won't be able to do that for fresh backups. I've got 3 of them running. One local, two NAS.
Ideas?
