Hey guys, i went ahead and picked up a homepod the other day thinking I could play all the sounds through it from an apple tv, and that works. However, then once I do that every smart thing on it stops working. Siri just responds with I can't do that, and then after a few minutes will finally be able to do stuff again. Then when I go back to the apple tv I have to reconnect it.

Any way to have the homepod just prefer the audio from the apple tv while retaining other functionality?

Yes, same frustration, she will recall the weather while hooked to appletv but she can’t call up music and I’m not sure about the HomeKit stuff, I’ve just gotten use to using the appletv music app, she was disconnecting when appletv went to sleep but the last couple of days she has stayed connected.... hoping apple at least will implement a voice command for switching sources

In settings on the AppleTV do you have audio output to HomePod and not hdmi. I have mine hooked up to my AppleTV and Siri functions properly.

Your telling me that if you ask Siri to play a song or album while she is connected to appletv she will? She will not for me, she just says she can’t do that, yes have appletv output connected to HomePod

Just tried again, her exact phrase is hmmm I am having trouble finding that, basically connecting her to appletv cuts the connection to Apple Music

Yes. Just did it. I was watching a show on Netflix and said hey Siri play high hopes by Panic at the disco and response was “ok let’s hear high hopes by Panic at the disco” and it began to play.
Siri also turns on and off my lights etc. using the HomePod hooked up to Apple TV

Edit: Added video for non believers

iOS version? Many of us are not this fortunate, either you are on another version or you have a setting in appletv checked that we do not
[doublepost=1546718066][/doublepost]It’s bothering me you have this working, just to be clear, you are talking to HomePod Siri? Not appletv Siri through the remote

audioOs version on homepods is 12.1.1
tvOS 12.1.1 Yes I am speaking directly to the HomePod Siri, not the remote. You can hear in the video Siri responding on the HomePod and there is no Siri visual on the screen to indicate using the remote.

I don’t doubt you, it just makes no sense , I’m using same version, I have also read other reviews saying when someone is watching appletv and makes a Siri request it will play the request and drop the connection to appletv....however the review was written during a prior software release. .... i wonder if the WiFi router itself plays a role

Hmm. Not sure about the router thing. However I am connected through a Airport Time Capsule.

I give up for now... that seriously makes no sense, everything should be the same

I tried both, I tried selecting homepod as an airplay output, and then i also deselected audio output to HDMI and switched it to homepod. On both siri refuses to do anything until I disconnect the homepod.

Also I am on the latest updates for tvOS and the homepod OS, and iOS. My apple tv is the apple tv 4K, and I basically get the same results as Mercury7, homepod just refuses to do anything if connected to the Apple TV.. Not sure what's up.

This is very peculiar something isn’t right. Surely I’m not the only one who has it working.

You aren’t. I thought the HomePod was supposed to work this way. I’ve only had mine a week. But I’ve been using it with tv 4 and all of the smart functions still work. Mine works just like in your video. Off topic, I love Parenthood!

Glad yours is working as well. Yes it is the way it should work. I never even thought otherwise til I saw this topic and how it wasn’t for a couple of people. And yes Parenthood is great.

If Siri could not connect to internet at all then the troubleshooting would be more straight forward, however you can ask Siri for the weather and she will report normally so she is still connected, it’s when you ask her to play Apple Music that she fails
