Using i-movie 11 and i-photo

Hi, I've recently updated to El Capitan on my Macbook pro (2012) and also had to update my iphoto and imovie. However, in using Imovie 11, I'm trying to import photos from my iphoto and can only access my photo booth library- why is this?? I can't even seem to transfer photos from iphoto to desktop or to an iMovie Camera Archives folder which has some pics in it but won't become accessible for the movie I;m trying to make. Any advice please???
