Using iLiberty ok with sim...

I currently have a sim for AT&T, however my roommate who I have a family plan with talked to AT&T and temporarily suspend the account till mid next month due the fact that she is changing jobs, and can't pay the bill till then... but i really don't feel like waiting that long to use the rest of the phones features... so i was wondering if it is safe to activate the original iPhone I just bought from ebay with iLiberty, while I have an inactive account/sim in it... meaning will the sim start to work once the account is reactivated?
